Chapter Fifteen
White Eggs
Savior returned from his secret home within the stone walls of Juan Eduardoâs cell. He waited patiently for Juan Eduardo to wake up. He had no other choice but to wait. Juan Eduardo was his only source of food, and he was famished.
Savior watched attentively as the disorderly heap of ragged clothes piled in front of him began to gently make almost imperceptible motion. Each time there was the slightest movement, his excitement rose. He was encouraged the fragile being within the soiled rags was coming to life because that usually meant he would soon eat.
Juan Eduardo stirred slowly from his deathlike slumber. He had been passed out for hours, but in his dreams, he was still telling his story about his first days in Sinoteca. His eyes were caked shut, and he struggled to raise his hand to rub the scum off his eyes so he could see. He managed to open his encrusted left eye. He caught a fuzzy glimpse of Savior doing the little jig he always did in anticipation of receiving his usual handout of dabs of food.
It took him a while to open his other eye, clear his throat, and find his weak voice. The first feeble words he managed to speak were directed at the steadfast Savior. âSorry, my old friend. I dozed off without feeding you. Come here and go into my pocket to see if there is any edible food left. I am hungry too. The jailer is late in bringing my daily slop.â
Savior wasted no time running up Juan Eduardoâs body and diving into the remnants of his jacket pocket. His long tail, which was mostly extended outside the pocket, wiggled excitedly each time he found and ate a rancid crumb of food. He ate all he could find and quickly exited the pocket, ran down Juan Eduardoâs leg, stopping briefly to wag his hairless tail in a sign of thanks before disappearing into the shadows of the cell.
Juan Eduardo was sad to see Savior go. He wanted him to stay and listen as he continued to tell his story. To his surprise, Savior quickly returned and took up his spot near his leg. Saviorâs return indicated to Juan Eduardo he had a family and that he took some food to them. Juan Eduardo respected Saviorâs devotion to his family and appreciated his quick return to hear more of his version of a big story.
âSavior, thank you for returning to hear me talk. As you heard me say before, my first day outside of Florencia was a killer. Exhaustion and trauma forced me into a deep sleep that first night in Sinoteca. I was awoken by a faint knock on my bedroom door. Doña Teresa was concerned about me, and she was politely knocking to find out if I were okay. She said in the kind voice of an elderly woman, âAntonio, are you well? Please let me know you are all right, and we will see you soon.â
